How To Get Ready for Holiday Parties Without Harming Your Hearing Aids

The holiday season is chock-full of events, ranging from casual to formal. If you’re attending an event on the fancier side, you’re probably going to spend some time doing your hair, picking out an outfit or applying makeup. If you wear hearing aids, it’s essential to take care of your devices while getting ready.

An estimated 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids. For all the clear sound they offer, you want to make sure you’re caring for your devices. While newer hearing aids are designed to last, they still require careful handling and maintenance. Heat tools, water, hairsprays, makeup and more can damage your devices.

Protecting Your Hearing Aids

Try the following tips to protect your hearing aids from holiday damage:

  • Remove your devices when necessary. You shouldn’t wear your hearing aids while heat styling or blow-drying your hair, showering, washing your face or applying hairspray. Once your hair is dry and all hair products have set, you can put your devices back in.
  • Wash your hands frequently. Our hands can get pretty heavily coated in makeup and skincare products when we’re getting ready. Remember to wash your hands before handling your devices.
  • Watch out for wet nail polish. Almost everyone who has ever painted their nails knows how frustrating it is to smudge or dent fresh polish. Accidentally transferring polish to your hearing aids only heightens that frustration. After leaving Happy Nails & Spa with a fresh manicure, wait at least an hour before touching your hearing aids to ensure the polish is completely dry.
  • Talk to your hairstylist. Most hairstylists are familiar with hearing aids and know how to cut hair without damaging your devices. However, it’s still a good idea to let them know you’re wearing hearing aids. They may ask you to remove your devices during hair washing or dying.

Protecting your hearing aids with the above tips ensures that your holiday party prep won’t prevent your devices from delivering clear sound all night. For more information on hearing aid care or to schedule a repair and service appointment, contact Tinnitus & Hearing Experts today.
